Review on Sony DVP SR200P DVD Player Black by Rodney Harris

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Bought ONLY to play music CDs

Component music CD players for stereo systems range in price from $99 to several hundred dollars each. Since this player is advertised as compatible with music CDs, I thought it would be a less expensive alternative, and it was. The first model I received was locked and stuck playing discs, so I contacted Revain and arranged an exchange for another. The exchange process was smooth and painless. Revain paid for the shipping and immediately sent me a replacement that works great. This player is extremely compact. The remote for it controls it from at least 20 feet away, but there's no button on the remote to open the player's disc tray. Since I can't change discs without touching the player, I don't find the lack of controls bothersome. The A/V cable that came with this player was nearly 6 feet long, which gave me considerable flexibility as to where the player could be mounted. The sound of a CD with this player is as clear and smooth as any I've heard. Unlike expensive component CD players, this player has little to no information on the front panel as to what disc or track is being played. But, hey, it costs about 1/3 more. This player is worth the money. When another DVD player I was using died, I had the opportunity to test its video capabilities. I found it adequate for a standard analog TV, but this player has a tiny display on the front and doesn't show much of what's going on. It also doesn't have component video or HDMI outputs, but since it's not advertised as converting regular DVDs to high definition, you won't need them anyway.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Hard to tell

A DVD player by any other name is... a great CD player!
