This thing is wonderful. We have 2. Both are for large outdoor terrapins. 1 heat mat is in a shed in a turtle enclosure with hay (but not on a mat), the turtle weighs about 159 pounds and we wired it to a thermostat to keep it at 70 degrees. Turns off and on when needed. The second one we have is in a 35lb dog turtle igloo with hay in it but not on a mat. We also have one that is wired to a thermostat to stay at 70 degrees. They save lives and make me happy knowing they stay warm. As a result, the heat is largely retained. I definitely recommend it.
