Review on πŸ”Œ NetDot Magnetic Charging Cable, Gen10 Nylon Braided Magnetic Phone Charger for USB-C and Micro USB Devices and Phones (1ft/3 Pack, Red) by Colton Scheehl

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A great idea; Some considerations

These things do what they do - charge your phone without undue wear and tear on the device's micro-USB port. Goldilocks Magnets: The strength of magnets will always be a compromise. Given that phones only weigh a few grams and are often slippery when all is removed, a magnet weak enough to hold the phone off the tabletop is weak enough that the cord will fall off under its own weight. On the other hand, a magnet strong enough that you never accidentally disconnect the cable while using your phone in the car would hold it tight enough to interfere with or potentially damage the micro USB port. You pass the middle ground quite well. When I pick up the phone from the bedside table, the cord falls out without me pulling the phone out of my hand. But I have to be careful in the car. Good Wire: Cloth covered cables are much more flexible and overall nicer than traditional vinyl covered cables. Good if quirky customer service: at first my cables didn't work with my Samsung phone. Customer service takes place during a conversation on Facebook Messenger. A nice guy with less than perfect English answered my question in about 18 hours. Between 12 and 18 hours elapsed between each message and the reply. It's pretty cumbersome in the context of a live chat, but lightning fast in the context of an email. So a bit strange, but actually quite nice. Samsung problem solved: Two of the three cables in my original order didn't work on my Samsung Galaxy S7. During my call to customer service, the rep asked if I had tried all three cables. I had not. As a matter of due diligence, I tried a third cable. And it worked fine! The problem seemed to be that when plugging adapters into the phone's micro USB port, I would simply press down on the adapter with my fingertip. Apparently the soft pad of my finger wasn't exerting enough pressure to get the adapter fully into the socket. When I came back to check the remaining cable, for no reason I used the connector on the cable to plug in the adapter and voila - a working connection! Knowing this, I haven't had any more issues with the Galaxy S7 phones or my Samsung Tab S. The support rep said they've encountered problems in the past because the Samsung ports are "pretty tight". Data transfer works fine: I didn't check the bandwidth, but file transfer and Android Auto work fine. It doesn't matter which side of the connector you use. (According to some Revain listings, early versions of these cables only worked with the connector one way.) The small adapter isn't easy: I used needle-nosed pliers (my multi-tool, to be precise) too hard to gently pull the adapter straight out . from the phone. My phone case makes it impossible for a nail or tool to get under the rim of the adapter. Be careful not to break the magnet. He's quite fragile. Yes. I broke one. Needle noses with a plastic jaw may be the way to go. (He says in hindsight.) If you have enough cables, have a few spare adapters. You need more of it than you think. Cables you will need one of these cables for every place you charge your phone. In the case of my wife and I, that means two nightstands, two desks, two portable battery chargers, and three cars or nine cables for two phones. Throw in a few pills and you've got a dozen or so. Be warned. So I'm damn glad they're cheap. I just said. <Oh. Edit to correct "MicroSD" which I somehow typed throughout the review when I meant "Micro USB". Sorry. >
