Will not work with computer cable adapters

Just arrived and hooked up. The other cable I got for my iPad to HDMI works once plugged into the port. This cable didn't work. general. Not when connected. I swiped up on the phone and selected screen mirroring, but the cable was never found. Why does this cable need to take that extra step? I have a regular Smart TV, not an Apple TV. If this calls for an Apple TV, it should have been obvious.
