Review on ๐ŸŽฎ Thrustmaster Open Wheel Add-On for PS5, PS4, XBOX Series X/S, One, and PC by Kim Stanley

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works well on the T500 RS most of the time.

I bought the TM to use on my T500 RS for PC and PS4. This wheel is essentially the same as the one in the TS-PC set. My entire rig is mounted on the Playseat Challenge so I can move it between rooms where these systems are located. I initially had issues using this wheel on both systems for various reasons I thought were the culprits, but it turns out the wheel works fine as long as your base is updated to the latest firmware to allow for it the base that recognizes the new wheel. This solves the problem of completely wrong button mappings and other weird in-game actions, although you need access to a PC and the latest Thrustmaster drivers (on their website) to update the firmware. Static paddles for years, using the TM is definitely a bit odd for newcomers to this style of cycling. The overall idea behind this handlebar, apart from being the icing on the cake for the right feel of open wheel racing, is to maximize control. Basically, you don't need to move your hands from the 9 and 3 o'clock positions, which you can't do anyway since half of the wheel is "missing". The grips have a nice, chunky feel, although the suede grips feel a bit odd at first. However, it's a nice departure from the GT rubber handlebars that used to rub my hands after long rides. I haven't had paddles on a bike since I sold my G27 so being able to keep my hands in one place helps a lot too. The button layout is far less intuitive than the GT wheel, but it's pretty much self-explanatory. Overall very happy with the feel and construction of the handlebars. In terms of gaming use, I have only successfully tested it on PS4 with Gran Turismo Sport. Absolutely no problems to report. However, I also tried Project Cars and while everything leading up to the race worked flawlessly, there was absolutely no feedback at the start. I guess it's more the game's fault, although I don't rule out some madness regarding the new T500 firmware and/or the new steering wheel. I'll have to re-test this setup on PC but after a few runs with it in GT Sport I think I'm a fan of it. Overall this is a quality steering wheel that works and feels great. I really think if you're looking for more convenience then this is kind of a niche add-on for those who really want that tighter open-wheel/LMP feel. I still have a few problems ironing out/reaching conclusions on some games, but otherwise I'm quite satisfied.

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
