I've tried so many different aquariums over the years that this is the best for my Betta. beta before. The fish were less active because the large filters needed to clean so much water created strong currents that affected their swimming. They spent most of their time inside the plant, only swimming to feed or breathe on the surface. Even buying large tanks that were said to be made for bettas didn't help because they had the opposite problem. The current was so weak that the water didn't flow properly through the filter and soon I had problems with the water quality. A sick fish out of dirty water is not a happy fish. This aquarium is a different story. I added some filter threads to the inlet and outlet of this filter. The filter is still able to keep the water clean, but the current is so weak that the males can swim. They swim regularly now and appear to rest on plant leaves rather than using them as anchors. Weekly partial water changes and scheduled cleaning are very easy given the size. I like that one plug is used for lighting and filters. This means I can use a standard extension cord with a single filter plug on one end and a heater plug on the other. It's a space saver that easily fits behind the bookshelf where the tank lives. This also means that the light is outside of the tank. This is a great feature! I can't tell you how many times I've had to change the lightbulbs in the tank. Condensation immediately accumulates in them and they stop working. This light never gets wet and I suspect it will therefore outlast the life of the tank. For replacement filters I use 2.5g Top Fin Retreat cartridges which come in packs of two. I got them from another tank. They're too big for a boxed filter, but cut in half they fit perfectly. So instead you get four in a box, which works out to a dollar a month per tank. The only thing I don't like is the cutouts on the top of the tank. I think that should make it easier to remove the cap from the tank. The cover is already easy to remove, so they are not needed. Cutouts lower the water level you can have in the tank and allow the fish to jump out when detected. I sealed the holes with clear tape to make it easier to attach. It would be nice if they were removed in future versions.
