Animals love the taste but I don't like the ingredients

I think my health has gotten worse in the last few years. They used to be qualitatively at the forefront of the "holistic" pet food market. And you paid well for it! This new line of "essential" products seems like a big gimmick to me. I have been a small animal veterinary technician for 12 years, have a degree in wildlife biology, have been a zookeeper for many years and currently train and care for cats and dogs. So I have little experience in this area. I believe "basic" foods are meant to capitalize on the human diet trend toward simpler, whole-food diets. It's great, but we don't eat the same thing every day with just one type of fruit/vegetable. Dogs need a greater variety of whole foods in their diet than this food. I believe that using real food is the best way to keep every living body healthy and functioning at its best. This food doesn't offer much in the way of real food ingredients. It has one type of protein and the same form in "food" except salmon meat and salmon meal. And then a bunch of carbs and plant proteins (which dogs aren't good at digesting/metabolizing and so shouldn't be considered a major part of their diet). The only fruit or vegetable is the tomato. The rest of the ingredients are a long list of added vitamins and minerals because real food is not enough to provide the right balance of vitamins and everything a dog needs to stay healthy. I see ingredients as "cranberries" rather than "ascorbic acid" or as "carrots" rather than "beta-carotene". And especially for protein components - what about the liver, kidneys and heart that provide taurine, not a lab? Yes, I'm biased, but I care about the health of my animals and the nutrition I feed them gets results. don't let the taste fool you. ALL my animals love this food - and so do the cats! But kids love candy and potato chips, that doesn't mean they should have them for dinner. I use this as a treat because I believe the food ingredients here are of a higher quality than the grocery store foods and treats.

Pros
  • Made in a facility that also processes grain
Cons
  • Good, but not great
