seem safer than the ubiquitous shielded ends

These connectors may seem a little expensive, but they are reliable connectors. I was able to bend the ground sleeve out of the way to insert the conductors and then lower it back over the sheath for crimping without any of the tabs breaking or cracking. I had no noticeable frustration trying to stretch the ladder. Each of them fits perfectly with all the devices I've used them in. Note that they are suitable for shielded Cat5e or Cat6 cable, NOT Cat6A or Cat7. I used a Klein Tools VDV226-110 crimping tool to secure the RJ45 (which was my favorite). Platinum Tools definitely recommends a $75 crimping tool, but if you already have a reliable crimping tool that works with RJ45 pass-through connectors, you don't need it. I've also used the pull ends with an old simple crimping tool by simply cutting off the ends of the wires with wire cutters and then pulling them back 1/16" before crimping them. I used a Platinum Tools CT-360 crimping tool, to attach the ground clip and had no trouble. You could probably crimp the collar with pliers if you can handle them well enough, but if you're doing more than half a dozen of these operations at once, the CT-360 is worth it. My Opinion. In the installation I used a Ubiquiti ToughCable Pro (cat5e STP with ESD ground wire. There are several videos on YouTube showing how to properly crimp such a connector if you have never done it before.

Pros
  • Dramatically improves noise immunity at all frequencies, especially above 30MHz when cable balance degrades significantly
Cons
  • unreliable
