Very handy that you don't have to worry about slots and space when you have a knife set without a knife holder. If you only have 1 or 2 knives it might not have much room, but it does a great job once you start putting them in there. I have 1 cleaver, 1 cleaver, 1 paring knife, 4 stake knives, 1 carving knife, 1 carving fork. With some room to walk. It's great you don't have to worry about the width of your knives or what else you want to put in it, it's sooooo versatile and the great thing is that plastic straws (I'm guessing they're plastic) can be replaced if they are too worn or damaged. Unfortunately it's not as deep as we'd like, but we're talking fractions of an inch of fully covering the end of the cleaver if it's not flush. I wish they had a color choice for the bamboo color but I could probably customize that myself.
