Consider going by waist size.
I have a 38" waist and 50" hips. According to the size chart, that is size XL and XXL respectively. I ordered a XXL but it proved to be a bit too loose at the waist. So I then ordered XL and they fit like a glove! As for quality and comfort, these are AMAZING! My other bike/yoga shorts have bulky stitching and seams you can feel, but these are so smooth. I love that they are thick and durable, but not TOO thick and wetsuit-like.
