I have a little poodle who almost died when he was diagnosed with diabetes with pancreatitis and sepsis. The vet said if I had to take him to a university far away from us he might not survive. As former paramedics, we couldn't afford to live with a $10,000 poodle. So we brought him home, and as type 1 diabetics we knew what to do: administer insulin and antibiotics and administer intravenous fluids like a human. Our dog has been using the Alpha Track II gauge and these strips since his near death episode about 5 years ago. I give insulin about every 4 hours and check my blood sugar before dosing insulin so yes it is expensive but you have to keep your blood sugar under strict control and these are the ones vets use most of the time. I wish they were cheaper but pretty much everywhere you buy them they cost about the same.
