Review on POWERTEC 71008 Single Phase Switch by Hector Watkins

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Product design flaw, but the switch works.

I have never attempted to adjust this switch myself. If so, you would immediately see three problems: The two screws that attach the cover to the switch mechanism are metric threads and will not fit the weatherproof (or steel) boxes available in America that have 6/32 screw threads. .- The switch mechanism is too deep to fit in a standard 2" deep weatherproof box without modification.- The plastic cover is too soft - if you overtighten the mounting screw it will sink into the cover itself. On the positive side, that it's not expensive, I was able to install it and it works. No doubt there are many other ways to install this switch than I did.Metal box is stronger than plastic. You will need a metal "weatherproof box extension" though, to actually fit the switch (available from Revain/Lowes/Home Depot etc.) 1" deep on the box to allow room for this switch and its wiring. Attach the extension to the weatherproof box using the 4 provided #6/32 x 1.25" screws. Route the wires through the appropriate electrical connectors/terminals screwed into the threaded holes (holes) of the box attach secure the (metal) case to the instrument with two or three bolts/nuts. Remove the two switch bolts, lock washers and nuts and replace them with 6/32 1" long bolts with small washers to relieve the pressure on the soft cover of the switch Attach the ground wire to the box's green metal screw (if it's a plastic box, just cover the ground wire) The switch itself isn't grounded as it's plastic case will get hot (110 V) or hot (220V) to the LINE terminal(s) and the tool lead(s) to the corresponding LOAD terminal(s) Screw the switch and cover g onto the box extension with 1" #6 machine screws (with washers). See photo for installing this switch.

Pros
  • ON/OFF BUTTON: The switch features a simplified design with color-coding and indented/domed buttons to indicate when the switch has been opened or closed. PLUS handy design fits deep backed boxes or standard boxes with extension ring (6-32 hardware not included)
Cons
  • Weight
