Review on ๐Ÿ’ช ASUS ROG Strix Arion Lite Portable External M.2 SSD by Tim Airy

Really well done. Slower than promised and the Aura software is terrible

I really liked the build of this case. It's a lot bigger than the plug-in case I use, but it's so good I didn't mind. What really bothered me was that it was significantly slower than a pluggable case. About 300 Mbit/s slower. My plugable gives me a stable read/write speed of 950-1000Mbps. But this one could not exceed 700Mbps R/W. Pretty disappointing. I tried it with different cables and also on different computers and ports. On top of that, the aura lighting software is rubbish! I had an old version that I had installed on my computer a few years ago, it was pretty bad too, but at least I was able to get it to fade smoothly. Unfortunately this version couldn't recognize this drive so I had to download the latest version and damn it they really went backwards with the functionality. This is so VERY bad. This completely ruined the lighting on my PC, no more fade out, no multiple custom color pick options, although there is a custom pick in the drop down list. doesn't actually do anything! If your aura is set the way you want it to be, I would stay away from this update as much as possible! This will ruin everything! Anyway, except the software is terrible. It did little for this corps. With the limited options you get, the lighting on this thing is very soft, basic, and unconvincing. Additionally, this thing reverts to its default rainbow fade when you use it on another computer and doesn't turn off when you close the laptop lid. It doesn't draw too much power, but it's annoying if, like me, you've got this thing attached to the back of your screen. I sent it back. It just wasn't worth keeping without being able to properly control the lighting. If it wasn't for that I would at least get a replacement to see if it fixes the speed issues. Maybe one day Asus will refactor the Aura software so that it actually works properly.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Poor
