Drivers are now banned! was: Everything works, with extended monitors on Mac after November 2018 Disc 5.0.1

Update February 2020 The company is now blocking this product as it is not for sale so you will do it have to buy another one. The latest driver does not display a window on dual monitors, and the driver currently in beta no longer supports rotated monitors. Apple does not support the functionality of the DisplayLink drivers used by WavLink. Avoid this company until they develop Apple supported drivers. And if you buy one, get ready to let the company wipe the screen on your other monitors too. Pity! ---------------- ------------------ Everything seems to work as promised and the build quality is good. I use it on an older MacBook Air (running Mojave 10.14+) to run two external monitors, an external USB 3.0 drive and a keyboard. (Update after 1 week: Mac Night Shift doesn't work - sigh.) (Update after 3 weeks: Mac now crashes. No data loss yet.) On a Mac it's cumbersome to install with no security warnings, but I just followed the instructions . Get the latest 5.0+ driver from the website. Known Limitations: - My wireless USB mouse adapter was not working - as reported by DisplayLink. - Note that if you leave the DisplayLink to VGA adapter connected, the Mac will report the phantom monitor. I tested: - monitors 0, 1 and 2 (HDMI and VGA via Displaylink to VGA adapter) - second USB 2.0 hub with keyboard - external USB 3.0 drive. An unofficial 2GB file speed test showed a speed of 40MB/s, which is about half the theoretical one. - I hot-swapped the monitors and cycled the unit and everything behaved as expected. - Power was adequate according to Mac system report (e.g. 984 was available for a device requesting 500mA.) - I have not tested USB 2.0 or USB-C devices, nor have I used all ports. Product quality: This is a premium 3900 chipset (see website for features over 3700 in most competing devices on Revain). The device is much heavier and stronger than I expected and has excellent build quality. It's designed to be vertical/tall only (i.e. no option to remove the base and lay it horizontal, which would be my preference). The packaging is functional but confusing. There is a matte black top coat in the box to keep it looking sleek, but the black dust will stain the device. Instructions and some cables are below (not obvious). Instructions are minimal at best. About the installation: Apple/Mac security complains about both the installation and the download if you have default settings (do not allow apps except from the App Store). You must provide exceptions as follows: - Run the installer: get a warning, must cancel. - Go to Security in Settings. There will be a button to create an exception for the installer. - Run the installer again and it will run. Mac asks for a password to install software. - Reboot as requested. - After restarting, the driver is still not loaded. - Go to your security settings again, find the button (this time to prevent software downloads) and give your permission - Reboot and you should be fine. (FWIW, there are users on their forums who disable and re-enable security protection. I didn't have to do this, and I don't recommend it.) Note. I'm getting syslog warnings "(com.displaylink .useragent): This service has been detected as always running and inherently inefficient" - no surprise for the display driver?

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Nothing here
