My rat cage is lined with puppy mats and I place these mats on top. My rats love to sleep and chew on it. In fact, they prefer rugs to their earlier bedding, which consisted of soft, torn bedspreads. They used to love it, but now they take it out of the house and just sleep on carpets. Once a week, when I do a deep cleaning, I spray a *very* dilute solution of apple cider vinegar and water on the carpets, give them a quick scrub with a sponge, and then give them a thorough rinse with hot bath water. It takes me about 5 minutes and they air dry within an hour, or just a few minutes if I use a blow dryer. Now that they are potty trained I have found that I only have to rinse them with hot water and only use the vinegar mixture occasionally. They dry for about an hour and I throw them back in the cage. They rip the tangles but I've had them for 3 weeks now and they're still safe and sound. I think it depends on your rats if they survive or not.
