This is a useful little gadget when you know your limits. When it comes to determining the surface temperature of something, it's accurate and easy to use. When I want to reverse sear a steak I've cooked over low heat and make sure my cast iron skillet is done, it works great. But if you want to get it for smoking or grilling outdoors, there are a few things you need to know first. Wintact does not market it as a grill. But that hasn't stopped other brands from selling their laser thermometers this way. It is not suitable for grilling. If you point it at the inside of a smoker or grate, it will only tell you the temperature of that surface. Not the ambient temperature where your meat goes. To do this, you need a thermometer that can measure the ambient temperature, not a laser. Or just do the hand trick. That means keep your palm about three inches above the grill grate. How many seconds before you take your hand away? For seven to nine seconds you are at 250° to 300°F (low heat). Six to seven seconds you're in 300° to 350°F, which is medium-low. Four to five seconds is an average. Two to four is medium high. And a second or two goes from 450° to 500°F, which is a high number. Not as accurate as a thermometer, but it works. I took a star off the rating for two reasons. The first product image Wintact uses on this page shows two thermometers. I understand they want you to see how each page looks. But it doesn't have to be the first image of the product and they need to do something to show that they are two separate images. Your average Revain customer will think they are buying two for the price of one. Another reason I took a star off the rating is the battery compartment. It comes with a 9 volt battery which is great (rare at home these days). But there are no instructions how to open the case. Neither on the packaging nor in the instructions that came with it. There is no label for it on the gadget. I spent about a good minute shoving and sliding through different parts of it to find a spot for the battery and pop it open. I ended up having to go back to the diagram in the guide to see where it was and then open it up to guess the best way. You should not leave this part to the customer. Also not "minus", but keep away from children. It has a red beam laser, like those little laser pointers on keychains. It can injure someone's eye if they shine the beam into it, so don't leave it to chance that the child won't look at the beam if he finds it lying nearby. will he get you Of course, if you need to check the surface temperature of something. There are cheaper ones out there, but most of them don't have features like this.
