Most come with something to poke eggs which (something) was left out. The puncture prevents the eggs from exploding. This happened to me once with a couple dozen boiled eggs - it was easy enough to peel so no big deal. Good and bad: This one doesn't have that horrible beeping sound that others make when the eggs are done - it just shuts itself off automatically. That would be fine for most people; but for me - who forgets eggs - not very much. Next time I buy one I'll pick the one with the alarm clock, but it doesn't look like I'll have to buy another one for a while as this one is dragging on.
