Review on Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens, black by Micha Jwiak ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Everything in the purchase suits, a very necessary product.

On cameras with a crop factor of 1.6 (50d, 450d, 1000d, etc. ) - the portrait is just super! In fact, that's what I bought it for. Also suitable for reports, weddings and all kinds of ceremonies, when it is possible to move away from the subject a little (on the street or in a spacious room). In the autumn, on a sunny day, I shot a wedding with friends with two lenses, and suddenly I liked the photos taken with this fifty dollars more than the expensive 35mm L-coy (ef 35mm f / 1.4 L USM)! Blurred background, close-up faces, in my opinion, made the pictures more interesting. Landscapes can also be shot at 50mm, but it is much morecomnvenient to do this with a wide-angle lens. On the Canon 50d, this lens did not “take root”: itcomnstantly missed, or even refused to focus at all, often the picture turned out to be extremely overexposed, in a word - the devil knows what, which of them was capricious - I don’t know. I really wanted to take it to the workshop, but I set it to 1000d and, lo and behold! - works flawlessly and gives out such pictures, which is any-expensive (they seemed to be waiting for each other and now they are always together). In general, I am satisfied with the purchase, the device does not gather dust without work, the money was not spent in vain. Photos in my albums here

Pros
  • Of course, the first and main advantage is aperture. It would seem - well, what is f / 1.4 aperture? Only zero point four tenths more than its "brother" - ef 50mm f / 1.8. And this is what: shutter speed or matrix sensitivity (ISO) can be reduced by 1.6 times! (I just compared the metering results with the camera. ) That is, if in low light conditions we shoot at ISO 1000 units with f / 1.4, then with an f / 1.8 lens we will have to set already 1600 with all the ensuing consequences in the form of high noise and distorted color rendering. A sickly handicap of six hundred units is sometimes, oh, how necessary! Sharpness and detail are also commendable. These figures are highest at f/4. For connoisseurs of bokeh - powerfully and beautifully blurs the background. Nice design, on the carcass of 1000d it looks very harmonious, I would even say elegant (but against the background of 50d it is somewhat “lost”). The ultrasonic motor, designed to provide faster (albeit by a fraction of a second), accurate and silent focusing, is also not superfluous. (Although, it can also be classified as a frill to justify the ridiculously high price. ) The focal length - 50 mm - is quite in demand, making portraits on it is a pleasure. And the last thing: it is always on sale, unlike the f / 1.8 fifty kopecks, which are instantly sold out, rarely lying on store shelves. In any case, I have never seen f / 1,8 in my city, I had to buy this one =)).
Cons
  • Price. It is clear that it should be higher than that of the 50-mm f/1.8 II, but not as much!
