Review on ☕ Clear Kalita Wave Style 185 Coffee Brewer by Theresa Diaz

Longer life than my Chemex

I was a big fan of my Chemex 6 cup carafe but had issues with clogged filters and slow water flow. I tried different grind settings with my Hario Mini Slim guide and even shook the grind setting through a sieve to remove fine particles, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to get consistent results. It appeared that the way most of the filter was pressed directly against the flat glass concentrated the flow of water just through the bottom of the filter. I would have to lift the filter mid pour for it to start flowing again. A friend picked up the Kalita Wave 155 and I liked the small, sturdy and portable design, but during testing I noticed how smooth it was. Water leaked out even when I used the same meat grinder. He ended up buying me one as a thank you for doing me a favor and I rode it between work and home. Then I finally saw Wave Style and realized I hadn't used Chemex at home in over a month. I like having a carafe at home to serve in case I have guests, but I've obviously lost faith in Chemex so I went with this and couldn't be happier. Due to the wavy design of the filters, it does not protrude beyond the edges of the glass funnel and ensures good water flow. So far I'm not worried about fines clogging it up at all. Even if you have a Tanors Chemex cap, it's still perfect for wave style. The only issue I have with the styling is the extra details. With Chemex, it's just a wooden handle, carafe and filter, so at the end you just remove the filter, pour coffee, rinse and you're done. The Wave Style has a plastic handle (can be removed but is a bit stiff), a glass filter holder and a wire frame to prevent the filter holder from touching the carafe. It's difficult to take the filter out so I usually just pull out the whole cup holder to spill the flour, but I'm afraid I'll drop it one day. It would be nice if the frame and filter holder were a single piece of metal (e.g. just remove the bottom from the Wave 185) or if the metal frame held the glass filter holder while you shake out the filter. Anyway, I've become a big fan of the Kalita Wave system and I really like the Wave style. If you're a Chemex fan or need a replacement, try the style.
