Troubleshooting: Fish and Aquatic Animals

I have a 55 gallon. SW aquarium for over 5 years and has been struggling with red/green algae for 3 months; lack of success with other products/methods that have worked in the past. I didn't want to use this product due to the mixed reviews but I'm willing to try anything that works. Following the instructions on the bottle: I dosed 5ml on day 1 and then again on day 3. Finally all the algae are gone, all fish/inverts are fine after those 2 doses! Additional Observations: BEFORE I started using this product, I had been on other Cyano medications for 3 months and doing frequent small (2 gallon) water changes. Thus, the natural biosystem of good bacteria became depleted and began its own cycle of death-decay-perpetual algal blooms. So in addition to the last application of ALGAEFIX I used a full bottle of Bio-Spira (Instant Ocean) to restore the good bacteria and a small dose of Safe (Seachem) to detox any build up of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. During the treatment I turned off the protein skimmer, removed my usual chemical filter mix and added an air pump/aerator to provide extra oxygenation of the water. Many aquarists do not understand the complex nature of algal blooms or how different medications can contribute to secondary problems. . Killing aquarium algae can reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen. Changing water too frequently after taking medication can deplete beneficial bacteria. The loss of good bacteria can cause infection/disease/death of other aquarium inhabitants which in turn leads to higher ammonia/nitrate/nitrite levels in addition to supporting algae growth. It becomes an endless loop. Therefore, a controlled dose of ALGAEFIX may require dissolved oxygen supplements, biobacteria and the control of sudden ammonia/nitrate/nitrite spikes. As per the directions on the bottle, I will continue to use ALGAEFIX once a week as a proactive measure. I hope this additional information will be useful to others.
