For the money this is perhaps the best economical general purpose pre-filter I have found. The instructions state that 2-3 replacements of the fiber filter and carbon pad can be used. Although it might be possible to use more. They cannot be washed with soapy water, but constant rinsing and wringing can clean them. Maybe boiling water. But all the effort is not worth it. When used in a filter, they make excellent tile washcloths for cleaning bathrooms in and around the sink and toilet. Fittings don't scratch. Like I said, a pretty versatile filter. As of today, I have no plans to use anything other than the eheim product. 4 stars for the value. They cost around $9-$11 in the store, which I think is a bit high.
