LEDs are finally good for incandescent lamps

LEDs have been waiting for a long time. It seems they are here. Thanks to Congress for enacting a new law denouncing incandescent light bulbs and promoting this new technology. I would also like to thank Shuji Nakamura, one of the pioneers in white LED development. We tried a few LED bulbs a few years ago, but most of our lighting is in ceiling boxes. Ordinary replaceable LED bulbs (E26?) quickly burn out in ceiling glasses. By quickly we mean a week or two. Thermal issues created by upside down and indoor use will simply burn out. These BR30 spots are designed to project light downwards and are housed in a metal housing. They emit a surprisingly beautiful, slightly yellowish light and, in contrast to CFCs, are significantly brighter as soon as they are switched on. We used CFCs and as soon as we replaced them with some of these LEDs we realized we had been living in a cave all these years. So far they seem to be pretty reliable. We'll know for sure in a year or two.

Pros
  • a practical thing
Cons
  • so far so good
