I received this along with a bunch of extra fine filters when I decided I needed other filters (than you would find in a standard calendar or filter) for things like sifting coffee, stews/soups etc It's not as good as the ultra fine filters you can find elsewhere so I wouldn't use it for anything that calls for it like sifting bubbling fat from broth. But a well-stocked kitchen should have many strainers of different fineness! Thinner meshes (i.e. smaller openings) tend to filter out all the finer particles and even thicker liquids to some extent, but they also clog more easily and if you filter as you fill, the container is more likely to fill up. This particular strainer has a finer mesh than the regular strainer, so it's fine for filtering things like spices or even hot chocolate (with chunky cocoa chunks), although it's not very good for some tasks. - and this particular one is very well made and has a nice shell shape that can give you some light.
