Yes, good for quinoa

Holds a cup of raw quinoa and won't get lost through the floor. I lose a little on the sides when rinsing when I pour a full cup since the quinoa foams up on the first rinse and the quinoa seeds float on top of the foam. Less quinoa or more patience will solve this problem. I have no problem loosening grains stuck to the mesh. I just measure out the water for the pan, then pour it through the back of the strainer and it all comes out very easily.

Pros
  • Impressive
Cons
  • unreliable

I've been looking for a medium sized fine mesh strainer for a long time and finally found it. Most mesh filters have larger holes as they get larger, but this 5.5-inch mesh filter has a "fine mesh." I use it to strain savory chunks of whole wheat flour, which gives the finished bread great texture and high rise. If you are looking for a decent sized colander with a really fine mesh then this is it.

Fragile handle to connect to the filter.

This is a fine filter except for a construction/design issue. The handle is very fragile connected to the filter. The rim portion of the filter is simply lifted and the handle is attached to that portion of the rim with two spot welds. As for what that means, I found that the sieve shouldn't be shaken dry. This put too much stress on the rim welds. That's how my first sieve got thin. I ordered a second one to use and dry differently but wish it was stronger.

Handle broke after only 2 uses!

UPDATE: I tried this product a second time and the same thing happened! After about 7-8 uses, the handle broke while washing in the sink. Nothing complicated, just sponge and rinse. Separated - again. Never again. DO NOT BUY. I am returning this item the same week that I bought it. I'll try to use a spare to make sure it was just a disposable construction fart. On the second wash in the sink, the handle came off the frame. Hey, the description of this product incorrectly says "Heavy duty…

Fine mesh strainer is perfect for most pots

This strainer has a fine mesh assembly attached to a curved rim. Unlike most filters, this one has a hook that is about 1.5 inches long from the edge to the longest part of the hook. This longer hook allows the filter to fit into larger pots and bowls, allowing for hands-free sifting. The filter itself is 5.25 inches in diameter at the widest point of the top of the filter. The depth of the filter is approximately 2.25 inches at the deepest part of the filter. I'm sure it can easily strain food

Definitely good enough to strain white quinoa with no waste

This strainer arrived today so this is a first review. I'm impressed with the size of this 5.5 inch mesh filter. It feels very much like a tool in your hand. The diameter of the round stainless steel shaft that forms the handle is 4.4mm. I put in some regular organic white quinoa and shook it for about five seconds and nothing landed on my clean kitchen countertop. Bravo! I took some photos and would like to add them to this review. The way the colander itself is held up by the flat steel that…

Durable - not as fine mesh as ultrafine filters, but well built!

I received this along with a bunch of extra fine filters when I decided I needed other filters (than you would find in a standard calendar or filter) for things like sifting coffee, stews/soups etc It's not as good as the ultra fine filters you can find elsewhere so I wouldn't use it for anything that calls for it like sifting bubbling fat from broth. But a well-stocked kitchen should have many strainers of different fineness! Thinner meshes (i.e. smaller openings) tend to filter out all the…
