If I remember correctly, the originals had a wooden sole to allow the cleats to be nailed on. I was very happy that they came with three hole trap pedal cleats (that saved me $30 on buying a kit). I bought these for my vintage bike rides with L'Eroica and Tweed. What I like about the laces is that they adjust for the length of the foot. Just didn't like it, wish the top lace holes were reinforced with nylon, I think my old shoes will wear the top holes. but I will only wear them a few times a month while driving my vintage car.
