VERY loud whistle in kettles

Many kettles actually make noise before the whistle goes off, like the metal is expanding and contracting or something. This is very quiet when heated, but whistles phenomenally loud. The grip gets a little warm, but not as much as some others I've had. Anyway, I always use a small towel to lift my kettle so it doesn't bother me. I have a gas range and turn the heat up high enough that the flame may be coming off the side and heating the handle. If you're using a low to medium flame or an electric surface, it probably won't get hot at all.
