My daughter has very thick hair and it not only smoothed it but added shine. I used thermal protection. The brush side allowed me to flatten at the root and although it got hot it didn't flatten as well as the iron side - it didn't. The problem is that he straightened the roots better than just ironing them flat. The only issue I had was that the temperature window was on the flat part of the iron so it shut off and I didn't notice until it stopped flattening out too. Otherwise, I would recommend this combi iron!
