PGE Power "Security " Shutdown Solution

Order delivered one day after being notified by our utility here in Northern California that the power was going out due to wind. This was the second multi-day outage in just a few weeks. At the first failure I borrowed an inverter generator. It was sold out this time. Since I could not deliver the generator on time, I ordered this inverter and operated it on my car. These turned out to be two "safe" shutdown events with no intervening power recovery. I plugged it into my car and turned on my fridge, some lights and charged my phones. The refrigerator consumed about 200 watts when operating, and about 420 watts when pouring ice out of the ice maker. Startwatt showed 900 watts for a second or two. My '96 Toyota Corolla put out about 350 watts at idle without letting the battery drop below 12.6 volts. I used the load on my coffee pot the most, which drew about 900 watts for 8 minutes. The input voltage has dropped to 12.0 volts, maybe the alternator has overworked here because it has been pushed to the maximum. The battery was discharged in this short time. Since it wasn't a constant load, when it turned off, the alternator would charge the battery and power the smaller loads. I hooked it up to my wife's car with a much larger alternator and it handled 900 watts of coffee pot without dropping below 14.6 volts when charging. Generally, we used the fridge and other small loads from Saturday afternoon through Wednesday evening, started and turned the car on for several hours a day, and turned it off while we slept. Since it was in my driveway with no railings, I removed the inverter and left it inside while we slept. The inverter did everything we asked of it. I will update this if anything changes.

Pros
  • Useful for more than its intended purpose
Cons
  • Makes me angry
