You get what you pay for.

I bought these replacement struts because one of the struts on my R53 broke and the original strut wasn't strong enough to hold the hood. Replacing Mini/BMW OEM racks averages $90 per pair. I took a chance on buying them for just over $30 and they were pretty easy to install. However, after closing the hood and trying to open it again, I found that a strut was broken and only extended about 10%. Luckily I was able to open the hood about 3 inches and remove the broken strut after 15 minutes and a few scratched joints. I replaced it with the original strut which worked and now I can safely open and leave the hood open. I figured it would be too difficult to return the broken strut and wait for a replacement kit and I just got my bonnet working (it's been 2 weeks since I could easily check the oil on my R53 and we all know what it is playing with fire not to check the oil level and top up if necessary!) The seller is not to blame as I didn't do it. I'm not giving them a chance to fix it and I'm sure they would. If I could do it all over again? I would pay, probably by paying a premium and buying OEM racks.
