Good With A Little Fix

The boot stretcher works by a screw rod pushing a metal wedge down a wooden channel carved on the inside of both wooden pieces. These channels are very, very roughly carved and not smooth, so there is a lot of resistance to the wedge moving forward. This causes the wedge to bind up, and puts too much pressure on the metal pins holding the knuckle joint together causing the pins to bend and fall out of their sockets. All you really need to do to prevent this is to. swab a large amount of petroleum jelly into these channels allowing the wedge travel forward smoothly. It works great after that.
