I use them in addition to light fabric softener. They work great for softening clothes. However, I do use some fabric softener for static purposes. But they also help carry small loads. Have you ever tried drying something? It tends to just slip in a lump, but they move it around so it dries out faster. Yes, it sounds like a ball being thrown into a metal drum. So if your car is next to a living area it might be too annoying but if you have a door it's fine. They also make great cat toys whether you like them or not. I had a whole box in the dryer, now I have one. I will order more.
