This is by far the best short ball head. I've bought a lot of "short" ball heads, but they're about 2 inches or larger. This one is 3/4 inch shorter than all the others and I love it. The handle is very sturdy and smooth and doesn't interfere with the surface of the base to which I attach this ball head. The knobs on some other ball heads are too big and I can't tighten them because they touch the surface of the base. This is properly designed and built. The bottom female thread is for 1/4 with no option to convert to 3/8 and I like that a lot because the bolt size converters that come with some ball heads with this option tend to get loose quite often.
