My 2006 Bobcat UTV starter didn't work well - the starter turned but the solenoid didn't push the gear forward to engage the flywheel. After repeated attempts, it jumped and started. Did my due diligence and got a point. # removed and ordered the original starter. Decent price and free shipping. I removed the original starter motor and removed the gearbox end cap. I wonder what the problem is. The worm wheel that the geared motor slides on was covered in old grease and dust/dirt. Sprayed with degreaser, then lubricated. That was all that was wrong: the electrics are fine, the engine is fine, the gearbox is fine. Since it failed I fitted a new starter, was able to return it but the original was 11 years old. Well around the barn I also noticed a small 15/64 inch hole in the starter housing opposite the worm gear and solenoid drive. All I had to do was crawl, degrease and re-grease that hole and the starter would be fine and save me $63. Live and Learn If your unit uses this starter (or possibly a similar one), locate the oil hole on the bottom of the starter. Degrease, grease. You can save yourself headaches.
