There was some rust after my first dishwasher and air drying. It doesn't matter as I scraped it off and now towel dry it after washing. It's a minor annoyance, but the grater is quite comfortable to use and I'm willing to put up with that. The grater and plates are thick and fairly stout, which is nice, especially when you're using softer cheese and need to apply some pressure. In use, this is a good grater.
