Connecting to the app is weird, but it's possible.

What you need to know is that the button you need to hold down to enter pairing mode is not the power button on the controller that connects to the lights the remote control. After that everything is super easy. Lots of preset modes you can customize with the app, it's very easy to adjust color and brightness. They're fairly short so you might need a few to cover a longer area, but they work great.
