These are ultraviolet LEDs just as near infrared LEDs are sometimes referred to simply as infrared. They emit so much visible light that it distorts the color of the illuminated fluorescent material. For example, glow-in-the-dark plastic that should glow a bright greenish-white color under UV light will glow a dull bluish color. I bought these because my black fluorescent light is too big to fit in the case where I shoot video. Incidentally, the light is so black it's hard to see even if you look directly, but it does illuminate the fluorescent material! I hate returning items but this was advertised as a black light when actually it is a dark purple light with some of the properties of a true black light. If I can't think of any other use for it in the next few days, I'll have to send it back. Ultraviolet light is called ultraviolet because it is said to be beyond the wavelengths that humans can see. While it might be great for a party, it's useless for serious work.
