4 large open holes at the top are handles for the user to hold onto while sorting; They're too dangerously sharp to handle. What I received had parts of the inside edges roughly cut/parted and all inside edges were very sharp ie. not bent or bent to the side. When I picked it up by the handle to put it in the dishwasher as soon as it arrived, I cut my fingers. The seller/dealer, Flavor Tools, was excellent, responded quickly to my concerns and returned the purchase. get one that doesn't look like the one I got.
