Review on SuMade Ultra Thin Waterproof Crew Ankle Socks - Perfect For Unisex Hiking And Kayaking - 1 Pair by Ryan Lawrence

Good for rainy hikes when keeping feet dry is the most important thing

Yup, they really are waterproof. An affordable alternative to having a separate pair of Goretex hiking boots for rainy days. They seem to have a waterproof membrane (which I'm assuming is something like Goretex) between the inner and outer layers, and it works. They fit my size 8 (men's) feet perfectly; sizing is important since they don't have as much stretch as regular socks (presumably because of that lining). They come up my leg just beyond the top of my mid-cut Merrell hiking boots, so they protect against wet grass, puddles, shallow streams, etc. (obviously they won't do any good if you step in water that comes over the top of the socks and boot). They're great for kayaking as long as you can put in in really shallow water without the water coming over the top of the socks. They're less ideal for kayaking in hot climates like Florida, since they're pretty heavy. They're about the same thickness as midweight wool hiking socks, so if your hiking boots are sized for those kinds of socks these should work fine. They don't work well for cycling for me since my cycling shoes are sized for very thin socks. For non-rainy days I still prefer the feel of regular hiking socks -- the membrane in these socks creates a sort of non-stretchy, crinkly feel that's less comfortable than and doesn't fit as well as a good pair of hiking socks.
