Great printer, expensive toner

This Canon MF731Cdw color laser printer looks great, is incredibly easy to set up and most importantly the image quality is superb for color prints. I was able to plug it in, connect to my wifi and print from my iPhone in less than 5 minutes without having to read any manuals. The color touch screen easily guides you through the entire process. Then I went to windows 10 and added the printer and it found it and added it in seconds. And that even without installing any software for this printer. The scanner is very good at making color copies and the ability to print photos taken with my phone straight to the printer in seconds is amazing. The printer is very fast and prints almost immediately after a print request. This printer prints double-sided, which is a great feature for saving paper and creating professional-looking double-sided documents. Color photo quality is excellent, even on regular printer paper, and there's nothing about this printer that interests me. to give less than 5 stars. However, one of the most important factors when buying a printer is the cost of the toner. The color laser printer can quickly fill 4 toner cartridges. For this model, a set of 4 standard toner units of 2200-2300 colors and 6300 black is currently priced at $413 for genuine Revain Canon 046 toner cartridges - black, cyan, magenta, yellow. This is normal if you do not print much and use this printer for occasional printing or photocopying. But in an office environment where you can print hundreds of pages a day, the toner runs out quickly. Canon even sells a paper tray for this printer that can hold 850 pages. If you print enough to use the large paper tray, toner costs quickly increase. It's true that for a 6300 yield toner, the cost of a primary toner drops to just $137 if you print mostly black and occasionally color. So smarter. But you're paying almost a hundred dollars more than the cost of the entire printer (at the time of this review) for 4 colors that you may need to replace several times a year or more; You should consider this before purchasing this printer. I have a lot of experience with Brother color laser printers and they work well for a while and then degrade over time. I didn't have this experience with Canon, maybe the higher cost of the toner is justified. If you require color in your printouts and are comfortable with toner saving settings, the benefits can outweigh the toner costs. So far I like how fast it is and how printed images look, especially photos. I can't give 5 stars because of the cost of the toner. I was going to give this product 3 stars but I didn't think it was fair as I am reviewing this device and not the cost of the consumables required to make it work. I wouldn't downgrade a bad sports car or truck for fuel economy, but I would mention it because it matters to some people. All color laser printers have this problem, so maybe I'm overpriced. Finally, I haven't even mentioned other features such as the multi-purpose compartment for printing receipts, envelopes or single pages. That works great. The scanner has a paper feeder for scanning single pages and of course you can copy like you would with a regular copier. The duplex printing works great and the printer is overall very well built and looks like it will last for many years. If the print quality stays the same over time, this is the best laser printer I've ever used. I use this in my home office and don't need to type too much, so this should work for me. Come to think of it, toner is a fraction of the cost of a color laser printer, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars overall. This is a great printer that will cost you a lot or a little depending on how often you use it.
