Anyone who had an original Brother 1034D will immediately see and enjoy the updated 1034DX. Whoever updated it must have been the sewers because the changes are great! I sew and sell my handmade garments and accessories and my serger has changed the way I do business as it is easy to use and finishes everything from silk to cotton. Add to that the work for myself which means I can't justify spending on an expensive machine so the Brother 1034D and DX are perfect for my use. So, in the middle of a project with super heavy material, when I accidentally locked up and messed up the timing of my 1034D overlockers, I came up with a few solutions. I first spent 2 days learning to adjust the tension, swearing and swearing, but I guarantee you I can take my 1034D (all capital letters) apart and put it back together with my eyes closed! - (Thanks to some helpful YouTube videos!) But the fine-tuning still eluded me. The call to the Brother dealership was "$95 to get in the door", which is why a new 1034D is known to cost less than $200. Replacing my old serger with the updated DX was a leap of faith, since most of the reviews refer to the original and I knew every part of my original! A review from a Brother rep claiming the only thing changed on the new model was the LED backlight really confused me and I was hesitant due to the price difference of around $10 but then bought the 1034DX - downtime is money wasted! As usual it arrived a few days later and I got to work straight away - imagine my surprise when I took it out of the box and saw more than just 'new light'. I have attached photos to show the changes. In fact, I'll list what's new in hopes someone on the fence will find it useful.1. The "how to" DVD is great! Everyone knows, that the DVD was terrible when it was old! Years of copying has made it blurry again and again (really, Brother? is a best-selling machine and it still references its original 11-year-old model number?!) It's sharply focused, clearly showing not only the cut, but the cut as well departure. ends. NO MORE youtube videos! 2. Updated theme tree (see photo)3. These metal tension guides have been replaced with simple perforated guides (not shown)4. The compartment door in the front cover can now hold an updated hex key (even a new and more useful one!), a set of needles, tweezers, as well as a sewing finger (see photo)5. Threading is a little different and makes more sense - now, with the added lower looper threading lever, you go from right to left in sequence (see photo with compartment door open)6. The KNIFE lever is cool - instead of having to remove the blade, you can lower it for a non-cutting overlap (see photo)7. The stitch length wheel and differential feed wheel have been moved to the right side of the machine. (see photo)8. The stitch width wheel is on the front panel9. Now there is a subtle change in the threading of the two needles - the separator is in the channel - see photo - makes sense.10. Oh yes the bulb is now LED :-) I probably missed a few things and this review will probably be most useful for those who have already owned the 1034D, and therefore the differences which I shall mention will be clear to you. (as are the photos!) If you are new to sanding I would recommend the 1034DX as the updates make the machine easier to work with. All of the changes I've mentioned will make your first experience of a series an ongoing experience, not a one-time experience set aside :-). Overlock will change the way you sew. BOTH machines are workhorses. I was happy with my 1034D, but now even more so with my 1034DX!
