Yes, you need to buy a battery (LR44 1.5V)

I love this little kitchen timer. It's cute and easy to use. I don't like many buttons, I want simple ones. This chicken has 3 buttons, one each for minutes and seconds (eyes) and a start button (beak). So damn cute! The alarm clock is quite loud, but not annoying. I agree with other reviewers that not including the battery is inconvenient, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. FYI, LR44 (1.5V) battery is required. ) button battery.
