Compared to EdgePro, DMT, Wicked Edge

Summary: This item is an update to the EdgePro sharpening system that uses non-diamond stones (standard stones) as well as diamond stones popularized by industry leader Diamond Machining Technology (DMT) [Please note that this product DM "D" which is not related]. Background: I've been sharpening knives for the past 35 years, starting with Arkansas stones and butter. Have many DMT products and they are the industry leader. There are several sharpening systems available to you including Wicked Edge, EdgePro and a few other less expensive brands. I can also sharpen by hand. There is no substitute for learning proper sharpening techniques no matter what system or type of stone you are using. Observations: 1) Despite a similar operating concept, this system is much smaller than the EdgePro, 2) the clamping system works well on parallel blades on end blades and on average only on conical blades, 3) Diamond grit 240/400/1000 and 1200 ceramic grit, 4) For my evaluation I sharpened three kitchen knives and my hammer knife. Recommendations: 1) When sharpening with a diamond, let the stones do their thing; Trying to push harder will accelerate wear on the stones. 2) When it comes to sharpening at an angle, constant adjustment and movement is key to a good sharpening; 3) When installing the vertical arm into the yoke mount, adjust it to the same height each time (I made mine flush with the base of the yoke); 4) Center the blade in the clip (other than what the instructions say); 5) Diamond stones need a break-in period, they get rougher in the first few cycles of sharpening so I started with my hammer knife and then progressed to kitchen knives; 6) Start with the finest grit, in my case I only used 1000 and 1200 ceramic as 240/400 grit is only good for reprofiling; 7) Store the Allen key in the clamp; 8) It's better to keep the whole set in a sealed box. Pros: decent diamond stones; the clamping system works normally; incl. additional clip for mounting surface; Cons: 1) the instructions are missing important setup information, 2) the system would be much more useful with a 400/600 diamond stone than with a 240/400. Conclusion: For 40€ I award 4 stars. Several reasons for the deduction of 1 star: 1) The "DMD" brand is similar to the industry leader "DMT"; 2) the same design as the EdgePro system and 3) no 400/600 grit diamond stones.
