Did not live up to the reviews read

I bought this thermometer based on several good reviews I read. I quickly became disillusioned with my purchase. I put batteries in the devices and the receiver beeped when turned on. I read the manual to familiarize myself with how it worked and then used it to take the temperature of hamburgers. It seems to measure the temperature accurately, but is slow in my opinion. I'm not sure if this is typical for a wireless probe. The handset is not firmly seated in the cradle. If it hits at all, the handset can easily fall out. The display isn't that good at certain angles. It has a sweet spot and also it becomes easy and difficult to read. Have found that I have to tilt the device to read the display. The receiver works with the watch even when it's off, which is a nice feature but not as necessary for a thermometer. The clock operates on a 24-hour military time format with no option to switch to AM/PM. At least I haven't found where to change it. The receiver will beep when the set temperature is reached. The device I bought only beeped when batteries were installed. On the second day, I noticed a low battery indicator on the display. Thought this might explain the display and no sound, I replaced the batteries that came with it with a set of new AAA batteries. After installing new batteries, the device did not beep this time, but the display got better, but only slightly better. I tested it by setting a low target temp to see if I could get it to beep. It was, but it was barely audible. I literally had to put my ear to it to hear it. Two days later I wanted to use it again and the low battery indicator showed again. It looks like the receiver's clock function has drained the batteries in a few days. It's impossible to turn it off completely except to remove the batteries. It's not convenient. I understand that the unit I purchased may have been defective, but I was very disappointed at the $50 price tag. I have since sent it back and am currently looking for a new grill thermometer.
