After our last "modern" brewing machine went haywire - the coffee grinder (long since out of order) on the stupid thing started by itself - I decided to go back to the good old reliable coffee machine. After much deliberation, I decided to do it. Glad you did! This is a very good percolator and does everything I expected. I also love the fact that it doesn't take up half my counter like the new fancy drip machines that aren't going to last much longer. I've read all the reviews and got some advice from other reviewers (e.g. make sure the basket is damp before inserting the filter, especially if you're using finer ground coffee (drip grind) - brilliant!) I use regular ones basket filter. Just take a small stack, fold in half and make an incision. halve to the other side, make another cut; Now you have a filter with a "hole" to put it on the rod in the basket. Several reviewers said they had issues with coffee dripping from the clear top handle. (By the way, the clear pen is plastic. But what else can you expect in today's throwaway world?) I might have had a drop of it a few times, but that's okay. I just make sure the lid is tight on the pot and haven't had any problems since. Since this coffee maker doesn't have a timer, I plug it into a timer socket and wow! Freshly brewed coffee when I wake up! It smells wonderful when brewed and I can't help but love the sound of the oozing and watching it perk up (Favorite Childhood Memory). The coffee is HOT and tastes much fresher than filter coffee. It stays hot until it turns off (when it's empty) or you unplug it - without that burnt oven taste (and I left it on for 3-4 hours). I can only say 2 negative things about this kettle: 1- it seems quite noisy but you get used to it pretty quickly and I expected it rather for such a brewing process; and 2 - unless you grind your own beans (or can't grind them at the store), it's hard to find a percolator coffee that's coarser than a filter coffee. But the grinding isn't the percolator's fault! If you use drip grinders, be sure to use a filter! I've ground both with and without a filter, and grinding with a percolator leaves some residue from grinding without a filter. Drip milling without a filter leaves LOTS of grinding residue behind. but for me it's no problem, i just close my eyes, enjoy the smell and taste, look at all my trees and remember the good old days with camping and coffee by the fire :) overall i'm very satisfied and would buy and buy again.
