Hi I'm a longtime engineer and coffee lovers and coffee makers are my passion. I'm also the "Made in America" type (when I can) and also have trouble drinking through plastic sucking out the gross stuff. I've used press pots (pretty but stupidly difficult to clean), espresso makers (great, but a lot of work for a cup), and my latest Chemex affair (made in America, no plastic in the way, great coffee). But Chemex drove my wife crazy as it took 20 minutes of "art" to get a cup that went cold very quickly afterwards. So I started searching with the above criteria and came across this Bunn Speed Brew Elite - hmmm looks cool. My counter says Made in America, great reviews, and if you're paying attention (I was paying attention), the only plastic in the coffee path is the spray head and filter housing, both made from commercial food-grade silicone, which is the least leech plastic you'll find can get. So it meets all my requirements. HOWEVER, this coffee maker isn't like the other girls - it requires some prior research as well as careful reading of the instruction manual (I've done it twice!) before using it. (By the way, engineers know what RTFM means ;-)). I love trying new paths, and that's an important element of this bunn. *** Tip 1 *** Run at least THREE pitchers of fresh water before brewing your coffee to get some "Zen" out of it. - Once you do that, it's easy. Plus, it eliminates future smells or oddities (hell, you should be doing this with every coffee maker you have). WATER WILL FILL - the heated pot is already filled with water, so technically you're pouring the "next pot" to start the current one. *** Tip 3 *** Use Bunn Filters! If you use other filters without practice, just ask for a big mess - Bunn's filters are HIGHER than regular ones. Just do it. Get it right (coarser grind, but more coffee - and this bunn really does use more coffee due to the fast nozzle) and it'll brew a bloody cup of coffee in record time, no kidding! It's literally so fast you don't need a timer. As soon as I thought about it, I realized that timers are kind of smart ones. Bunn Speed is the way! By the way, I paid a little more for this silver model - it simply looks cooler on my counter and enchants coffee guests. This is something like a unicorn - guests can't take their eyes off it - then try it and keep asking questions! After all, this is the newest drip coffee maker still made in the good old USA. A. Kahn doesn't hit with a stick - one more reason to support them! So take the time to prepare for use and you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.
