Just screwed into the socket. Provides a two prong socket - perfect for some things but not suitable for three prong (grounded) items. If you're thinking of wiring the lamp socket, a ground wire could be attached to the housing, but there's no place to connect the green ground wire to the socket itself. In many cases, you only have the options of gold screw (black wire) and silver screw (white wire). Several supposed "experts" advised me to simply pull the ground pin out of whatever I wanted to connect. I reject this advice. Some tools are double insulated and only require two pins. Excellent. Others are three-prong grounded because that's how they're designed for safety. Electricity can sting or kill you.
