Review on ETL Certified, 1500W Ceramic Adjustable Thermostat Electric Space Heater - Portable Hot Cool Fan for Home Office Garage - With Tip-over Overheat Protection by Tammy Freeman

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Possibly dangerous - mine definitely was.

I'm an electrical engineer. When I first received this I noticed that the cable seemed too thin for the load. The cable rating says it's 2 x 16 AWG, and it looks about right, rated up to 105 degrees C. That's ONLY enough to charge a 1500W heater - essentially no headroom. Unsurprisingly, the cable got quite hot—especially the connector end. It's strange, but I followed the first few uses closely. On about the fourth use I tried to unplug it from the (much heavier) power strip. Impossible! It didn't make any sense to me at first. I wiggled and pulled, gently at first, then with increasing force. (Don't worry, the extension cord has been disconnected). I knew I was in trouble when I started using a large screwdriver as a pry bar. Then he moved, but not for the better: the pin was pulled out of the molded rubber stopper! At that point it was broken, so I proceeded to destructive testing. The problematic pin just doesn't come out of the extension cord with any effort. At first I thought I somehow inserted the wider pin into the smaller side, but I didn't - it was correct. Instead the pin appears to be welded/soldered/soldered to the extension! I can only assume it must have arced or made such close resistive contact that it had intense local heating. In any case, it destroyed the heating cable AND the extension cord. Glad I checked otherwise it could have easily started a fire. live and learn I could replace the power cord with a 12 or 14 AWG cord fairly easily (and this time I'd use a 3-pin connector for added security). I'm not sure I'll do that though - it's already (quickly) proven unsafe and poorly designed.

Pros
  • I'm looking forward to it
Cons
  • Periodicity
