Let me start by saying that I have considerable experience with enterprise networks, my entire smart home/office environment was built with Ubiquiti products and I'm a fan due to the many enterprise functions they combine of the portfolio was. at a reasonable price. As the pandemic led to greater reliance on the internet for work from home and school, providing backup internet access with plug-and-play compatibility seemed like the perfect complement. I liked the concept of a low monthly recurring fee with additional costs tied only to "as needed and used" consumption (as an alternative to a high monthly recurring fee for a second ISP). To be honest, the integration and activation was simple and straightforward - although after a few months I can only say that the concept is great, but the high maintenance fees and limited control are overwhelming. Data transfer*, while data transfers beyond that are subject to an additional fee of $15/GB* (*I understand there is an introductory promotion currently underway that will temporarily lower this fee to $5/month) - although you can control which networks/VLANs are allowed to use the fallback internet (e.g. if you have a network for video cameras you can prevent streams from that network from being used), you cannot control what triggers failover or fallback, or the time you want LTE backup active what I consider necessary in view of the high usage fees. As an example, I've noticed frequent switches to LTE backup in the middle of the night. As far as I could tell, they were due to minor "flashes" on the internet that lasted a few seconds (a few missed pings?) and otherwise would have gone unnoticed. However, it will be a long time before I get my normal internet back, increasing my LTE usage during this time. Most recently, this happened during my nightly cloud backup β and during that brief 1am spike that I wouldn't have otherwise bothered to, I quickly increased my LTE usage by 2GB. during school/work hours) or less sensitive, for example if there is no internet for at least 1 minute or 5 minutes and not a few seconds. I was able to disable the LTE device in the UniFi controller to prevent failover and then re-enable it at any time when I was actually affected by the error, but disabling the device didn't seem to stop the failover. The only way to stop this is to block traffic on the switch port. Likewise, the only way to force a manual rollback was to restart LTE. The UniFi Controller now allows you to set a monthly data usage limit between 1GB and 20GB (in 1GB increments), however it will only *warn* you if you exceed that limit, but further usage until then will not* block* Doesn't exceed the limit by 2GB - so if you set the limit to 1GB, you could potentially be billed for 3GB of LTE usage ($45) per monthly cycle - circumstances that I essentially cover all Thanks to these arbitrary limits, Ubiquiti seem to benefit /AT&T while decreasing their value and requiring more management overhead. I'm already looking for alternatives. Much luck!
