Have never soldered anything, but.SUCCESS!

I have a Dodge Ram pickup truck with an 8.0 liter V-10 engine. When replacing the thermostat, a small metal ring was turned upside down, causing the thermostat housing to break very badly, almost in the middle. After not being able to find a replacement part, I decided to try this product. I ground down the V-shaped section of the crack to create a surface for the solder to adhere to. Because the body is made of very heavy die-cast aluminum, a propane or MAPP torch will not suffice in an ambient temperature of 34 degrees. Using the fryer's propane burner, I heated the part until it reached 300-350 F. Then, using the MAPP torch, I very gently heated the crack and checked the temperature by simply passing the rod over the prepared crack. After a few minutes, the rod began to melt on the cast aluminum. Heat and test a little more carefully, and then everything worked perfectly. The crack was filled with very good control over the molten aluminum rod. Although I had some trouble getting the rod not to roll on either side (a few inches up the sides) it wasn't too bad. The quality of the photo is not very good, but the crack was just to the right of the vertical tube on the left, between the large tube and the sensor mount, ie the vertical protrusion in the center of the casting. The crack ran across about 90% of the way. The truck only has 2 warm up and cool down cycles but everything looks great. I highly recommend this product to anyone with a little patience and curiosity! I am very surprised and delighted!

Pros
  • Stronger than aluminum, tougher than mild steel, excellent corrosion resistance
Cons
  • Easily torn
