Review on Optoma UHD38: Ultimate Gaming Projector with True 4K UHD, 4000 Lumens, & Enhanced Gaming Mode by Mike Larkin

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Expensive, noisy 4K projector with flaws and poor black levels

First bought as a used Revain product and it had issues but it doesn't get downgraded in this test. However, it had a yellow tint on the left side of the screen and kept losing signal from the HDMI source. Image Quality 8-10 Image is very clear, icons, text, colors look very clear. I am using a 106 inch screen from about 8 feet away and compared to my Benq Ht2150ST projector which is a 1080P 60Hz projector the difference is very clear. You'll see 4K clarity at that distance, but probably not as much once you get beyond 8ft. So if you're seated within 10 feet you'll appreciate the 4K quality as your eyes can pick out that kind of detail. The only downside that struck me right away is that the black levels are poor, very gray. It's probably the lumens, as the HT2150ST's blacks are very good. Build quality 5-10 Build quality is decent, nothing special. I think the Optoma projectors including the HT143X/243X/UHD50X look very similar but there's nothing special about them and honestly they look pretty much like cheap iron which makes you think wow I just got 1500 for these dollars spent? By no means do these projectors look like high-quality pieces of iron (unless you look at the Optoma P1). They also have that ugly QC label on the projector that makes it look like a cheap Chinese projector. I think the Benq HT2150ST looks better than the UHD50X anytime. Optoma needs to improve on the design, especially considering the price. Packing 5-10. The packaging is as simple as it gets. For the price, a small box with no styrofoam and no bag makes unpacking downright boring. The Benq packaging was fantastic, the foam, the projector in its own carrying case, even for a 1080P projector they feel so much better than the Optoma. Noise 5-10 The noise of this thing is terrible. It sounds like someone is starting a car engine right over my head. Every time the picture changes or something happens on the screen, this thing just speeds up and makes sure you hear it. Noise is something I don't appreciate because I don't want to hear it whine, I want to use it. The noise should be consistent and not constantly fluctuate between noise levels. I think it's bad technique. The same goes for other Optomas I use, but the Benq Ht2150ST has been very humble and quiet throughout all operations, so there is a difference. Case, poor packaging, annoying fan noise and cheap looks. I honestly can't believe this is a $1,500 product! It looks like it should be a maximum of $600.00 as 4K TVs are currently around that price range, so it's not a great value. screen, but once you're further than 10 feet, the clarity becomes less distinguishable between 4K and 1080P. Don't get me wrong, I'm always for 4K, but Optoma needs to step up their efforts to create high quality, quieter and more affordable products to match 4K TVs.
